YONKERS — In Thursday’s “Canine Competition,” the Yonkers Bulldogs proved to be the top dog, securing a commanding 84-51 victory over the Gorton Wolves. The result was a familiar sight for the two programs, mirroring Yonkers’ previous win against Gorton back in December 2023.
While the final score indicates a blowout, the story of the game was the evolution of Yonkers’ offensive strategy. Coach Henry has begun rotating his bench much more frequently, utilizing the full depth of his roster to keep legs fresh and pressure high. This strategic shift unleashed other weapons in his arsenal, turning the game into a showcase of balanced, team-centric basketball.
Depth on Display
Justin Rosado continued his hot streak, leading the charge with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. This marks Rosado’s third consecutive game scoring at least 16 points, cementing his role as an offensive anchor for the Bulldogs. Alex Gomez also provided a spark, contributing 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
However, the spotlight also shone brightly on the supporting cast, proving Coach Henry’s rotation strategy is paying dividends:
-
Arian Siljkovic was a playmaker all over the court, stuffing the stat sheet with 8 points, 5 rebounds, and a team-high 6 assists, along with 2 steals.
-
Omar Areche provided a strong presence in the paint and on the wing, tallying 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals.
A Program Sweep
The success wasn’t limited to the Varsity squad. The Junior Varsity team set the tone earlier in the day, fighting hard for a 56-49 victory, securing a clean sweep for the Bulldogs program on the night.
Looking Ahead
The victory brings Yonkers back to an even 5-5 record on the season. Conversely, the Gorton Wolves continue to struggle; their eighth consecutive loss (dating back to last season) drops them to 0-7.
Both squads now look toward their next road tests. Yonkers won’t have time to celebrate, as they face a quick turnaround against Lincoln at 4:00 p.m. this Friday. Fans should keep an eye on the scoreboard for that matchup—the Bulldogs will be facing a Lincoln defense that allows an average of 75.8 points per contest, setting the stage for another potential offensive explosion.
Gorton will look to break their streak when they travel to face Sleepy Hollow at 5:00 p.m. on the 16th.
